Course Description

The Running an Effective Staff Committee course is a two-day short learning course designed to prepare team members to participate in or lead workplace committees responsibly, ethically, and effectively. The course provides a comprehensive foundation in committee structure, leadership soft skills, decision-making tools, meeting management, and disciplinary processes assuring that committees are not only representative, but also productive and accountable.

Whether a team is establishing its first staff committee or enhancing an existing one, this course equips participants with the practical and interpersonal skills needed to build trust, handle conflict, manage meetings, uphold organisational values, and serve as a bridge between staff and management.

Course Outcome

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define what a committee is, and explain its roles, structure, and importance within an organisation.
  • Identify and apply core values and ethical principles in decision making.
  • Navigate the challenges of leading former peers and transitioning into leadership roles.
  • Demonstrate key leadership soft skills, including trust-building, communication, delegation, and feedback.
  • Develop a basic committee constitution, including aims, membership rules, and meeting procedures.
  • Conduct productive meetings, including chairing sessions, taking minutes, using agendas, and following-up.
  • Apply the Six Thinking Hats model to support better decision-making in group settings.
  • Use time management and MBWA (Managing by Walking About) to support leadership and team development.
  • Understand and implement fair and transparent disciplinary procedures, from informal counselling to formal hearings.
  • Promote staff morale, organisational collaboration, and accountability through structured committee participation.
